Our range of iron on letters come in font sizes from 1cm all the way to 20cm, but this does not mean we manually resize every single letter to that size. Please read this guide on how we size your iron on letters.
How we do it!
All our iron-on letters are sized based on "cm" and a "font size". For the example below, we will use our most popular 5cm font size.
The text itself is at a 5cm font size, but like 95% of the fonts, every letter will have a slightly different height. Just like when you type an email, you select the font size and all letters (uppercase/lowercase) are at the same proportional size - this is the same for our iron on letters. The lower case letters will physically be smaller in height than 5cm, but the overall font size will be 5cm.
How we don't do it!
If your word/name has a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters at a 5cm font size, we will not make them so each letter is the same height - it would look rather silly (as per the image below).
As you can see from the above image, the "h" looks completely out of place, but is physically 5cm in height - this is why we do not make iron on letters in this way.
Will all Uppercase/Capital Letters be the same size?
No. The majority of fonts are not always exactly the same size for each letter - this is down to the font itself as shown in the image below.
As you can see from the image above, even though the font size is set at 5cm, the actual letter height does vary between different letters - this is only usually a few mm and is not really that noticable in most fonts. Fonts like Graffiti really do have a size difference, but you can see this more on our fonts page.
Do I need to order smaller lowercase letters?
No. As we make all our iron on letters in a font size, this means uppercase and lowercase letters will be proportionall sized. Just like when you type an email and select a size of 12pt.
What width are your letters?
Letter width varies from font to font, and letter to letter. If you would like to know specific widths before ordering, please contact us. Generally speaking for every day t-shirts, a 5cm font size works really well for 5-8 character names, and a 3cm font size works for longer names.
The image above shows 2 different fonts at the same font size. The top line is Arial, and the second is IMPACT. IMPACT is a much bolder but has thinner letters which means longer names can be ordered at a larger size. Arial is a much wider font so longer names do need to be ordered in a smaller font size.
